HGV / LGV Licence and Test
The HGV / LGV Licence is made up of two category's which are explained below:
- Category C: is for a rigid vehicles of over 7.5 tonnes
- Category C + E: is for articulated vehicles of over 7.5 tonnes
The difference between the two categories is that an articulated lorry's cab can be disconnected from the cargo trailer.
You will first need to apply for a provisional licence for the C category first, and pass the driving test before you can move on to taking the C+E category test.
The HGV driving test
The test for a HGV licence will last approximately 90 min's and cover about 25 miles, on which you will be taken on various road and traffic conditions e.g. dual carriageways, motorways and smaller roads. The test will also involve manoeuvring vehicles in confined spaces.
HGV Driver's Job Profile
Lorry driver's can earn:
- Starting around £13,000 - £16,000 per year
- £16,000 - £30,000 per year or more with experience
Hours Worked
- up to 39 - 45 per week
Government legislation limits the amount of hours you can drive without taking a break. You could spend a lot of time away from home, which may include overnight stays, especially if you are travelling to Europe.
Work Environment
Most of your time will be spent in your lorry cab and you will be driving in all weather conditions.

It would help if you enjoy driving, have good driving skills and have a suitable level of fitness to work with loads.
